produce a rapid slide of the brain on the skull base and cut of the fine nerve filaments.<\/li><li>Tumors of the nose or brain.<\/li><li>Operations to the nose or head.<\/li><li>Endocrine diseases: Hypothyroidism, pregnancy, Addison\u2019s or Cushing\u2019s disease, Diabetes Mellitus.<\/li><li>Psychiatric among four possible answers as of what they smell.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW143631214 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW143631214 BCX0\">The patients complain that they cannot smell perfumes or other <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 SCXW143631214 BCX0\">odours<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW143631214 BCX0\">, while the food has a distorted taste. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW143631214 BCX0\">Initially, t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW143631214 BCX0\">he Otorhinolaryngologist will do a careful ENT examination with nasal endoscopy.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW143631214 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Traditionally, the check of olfaction is done by presenting of different familiar smells, such as coffee, tobacco, cocoa, or various spices. Recently, we are able to test olfaction with a more accurate test, the Sniffin\u2019 Sticks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TM<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> . Twelve different pen-like sticks are presented to the patient, and they are asked to choose among four possible answers as to what they smell. The test is available at the Athens Rhinology Center, at Athens Medical Center and is well documented and evidence-based.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Other tests, as imaging studies or blood tests, may also be needed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-743f1f93 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"743f1f93\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d97a188 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d97a188\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW23995425 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW23995425 BCX0\">Is Anosmia curable?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW23995425 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4><p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Covid infection causes anosmia in 60-80% of the patients, often as only symptom. In most cases, the smell disorder subsides without treatment in one month, but we do have cases, where the anosmia persists, recurs or transforms into distorted sense of smell (parosmia). Apart from Covid, common causes of smell loss are various upper respiratory tract infections, in which olfaction recovers in a few days, with simple symptomatic treatment. Chronic Rhinosinusitis, with or without polyps, often causes long-lasting loss of smell and needs specialized evaluation and management by the Otorhinolaryngologist.
