With a simple operative procedure under local or general anaesthesia, a minute titanium screw is implanted in the bone of the head behind the ear. In three weeks time, the screw is integrated in the bone and can be loaded with the weight of the hearing aid. The BAHA transmits the sound through the bone, bypassing the possible problems related to the physiologic sound conduction mechanism of the ear (eardrum and ossicles). Examples of conditions where BAHA may be indicated are cases of\u00a0<a title=\"\u03a0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03b2\u03b1\u03c1\u03b7\u03ba\u03bf\u0390\u03b1\" href=\"https:\/\/art-orl.com\/en\/common-ent-conditions\/child-hearing-loss.html\">congenital hearing loss<\/a>\u00a0due to selected syndromes with ear canal atresia,\u00a0<a title=\"\u03a7\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03b1 \u03a9\u03c4\u03af\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\" href=\"https:\/\/art-orl.com\/en\/common-ent-conditions\/chronic-otitis.html\">chronic otitis<\/a>\u00a0which failed to respond to surgery, or cases of\u00a0<a title=\"\u03a9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c5\u03bd\u03c3\u03b7\" href=\"https:\/\/art-orl.com\/en\/common-ent-conditions\/otosclerosis.html\">otosclerosis<\/a>, where surgery is not indicated or is not desired.<\/div><div><br \/>The BAHA is aesthetically superior to conventional\u00a0<a title=\"\u0391\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u0392\u03b1\u03c1\u03b7\u03ba\u03bf\u0390\u03b1\u03c2\" href=\"https:\/\/art-orl.com\/en\/common-ent-conditions\/hearing-aids.html\">hearing aids<\/a>, because it has no direct contact with the ear and can be almost invisible, hidden in the hairs of the head.
