However, there are cases which need thorough study of the movement of the cords during phonation, in which usual endoscopy fails to provide the information needed. The vocal cords (vc), move away from each other on breathing (1), to allow air to pass from\/to the trachea and lungs. On phonation (2) they approach the middle line, touching each other. Exhaled air passes through the narrow slit between them, and makes the mucosa and mass of the cords to vibrate, producing the sound of voice.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Stroboscopy is done with the usual rigid or flexible scopes, but instead of the simple light source, a special light source is used. This \u201cstrobo\u201d light source produces rapid light flashes, which are fine-tuned with the patient\u2019s voice. With the device at the correct setting, the vocal cords are shown as moving in \u00abslow motion\u00bb.
